Argh.....

Two words.....

Staph Infection

Yup, Rhett has a staph infection in his stoma and around the skin on his G-tube site. I have kept it so clean, I don't know how he got it.

They also tested him for MRSA, but we don't have the results back.

These are the days of our lives. :)

Angela's stoma ALWAYS cultured staph, because she's a staph carrier. Honestly, it NEVER once cultured clear. We stopped treating it unless the red area around it started getting wider than 1/2 inch. If you culture her ears, they culture staph. If you culture her nose, it cultures staph. Used to drive me crazy, now I know..it's just her. You still have to watch though, to make sure it doesn't spread. Angela's never spread past affecting her skin. However, when she has surgeries it IS a major concern because it affects her wound healing.

Hoping it's not mrsa though probably it's not. g-tube sites are notorious for staph infections; the stomach itself is not sterile and then you add in open wound (b/c that's really what it is)and voila! We spent lots of time w/nik on keflex and using baactroban ointment followed up by calmoseptine ointment. it will diminish with time. as i recall, the first year was hell for us w/nik's stoma.

hang in there!

HUGS! I hope it's not MRSA. Sometimes these things happen. Don't take it as if you did something wrong. You are doing a great job!

Zoey has had a few of them.Sometimes no matter how well you take care of the site,it just happens. Hope it clears up fast and we'll pray for negative on the MRSA culture.

How did you find that out? Did he have a rash around it or was he just feeling bad? Seems like over the last few days he was doing so good. Don't beat yourself up over this. His feeding tube is considered a foreign object in his body and you keeping it clean may not of had anything to do with it. I put a special request in at church today so he will have a lot of extra people praying for him. With that said, he is going to get better fast!!!

Take Care,

Kaci
