Navy Anyone?

Andy is going tomorrow to talk to a Navy Recruiter. Do I have what it takes to be a Military wife?

Rhett would get great health care, and I think we would survive financially with that much more than the way we are going now.

But It would be a HUGE change, and a probable move. Not to mention alot of time away from my husband.

Hmmmm...what to do, what to do.

Navy! Are you sure - he's not signing up yet just talking right? I haven't given you permission to leave the state with Rhett yet either ;-)

I thought he was doing nursing? Or is he pursuing nursing through the navy. they have a ton of good options there.

Gov't health care is better then what you have now, but is by no means great. If you're seriously looking to move to a different place, I know a previous poster mentioned MN, they have AWESOME programs, and all of Rhett's medical issues would be taken care of by medical assistance, as well as giving you assistance in either home health or respite (sometimes both). And I'm so sorry I can't remember which is your oldest son, But there are also decent programs for autism and aspergers (there is even a new school in the Twin Cities area just for kids dx'd with them). And I so wished I still lived in MN, as I would completely invite you to come visit and see the area, and introduce you to my huge (mostly) helpful family!

(((Huge Hugs))) Pam, I wish I could offer more help.

Mn is great. I teach in sped there. There are differences in services between counties though. Like most places, services and quality can vary widely from district to district and county to county.

The school mentioned above is called Lion's Gate Academy, and it is a free charter school. The board is made up of very well respected professionals in the autism community. Ausm.org is the state autism association web site, and the MN Down Syndrome association is very active and well organized too. There are also a lot of good autism organizations such as Fraser. Fraser also operates a school for children with and without disabilities, and a variety of other functions.

Pacer.org is also based here and has a TON of services and activities available.

Pam, I don't have the answers but I would like to think that the govt. would take care of their families. Have you contacted Renee over at My special K's? I would think she would have a really good insight for you. Good luck. I'm saddened that you are in this situation. I know somethings gotta give for you.

Keep up your stegnth.

I know you wouldn't be the first family to join the military because of healthcare. You have to do what's best for you and your family.

I'd say move here to CA....especially Northern CA like near Sacramento County...there are some awesome resources and programs for your special kids. I can't say SSI is any easier here but we do have a program called IHSS which will pay you to care for Rhett's medical care at home. I'll keep your family in my prayers I can only imagine how hard it has been for you guys.

I'm a Navy wife and have to say ..think it thru, my husband is gone 8-9 months of the year, I raise our 2 sons pretty much alone. We struggle financially each month. He has never been able to be home for our sons b'days, (they're 6 and 3) We haven't had major holidays w/ him for about 3 years. We move on the average of 2 or 3 years..some of our friends move every year. I wish you good luck in the future. Abbie

I have to agree with Abbie. I know quite a few military families and it is tough going. If you're looking to move to a state with amazing programs, I put my vote in for NY state, specifically where we are. We are so blessed by the care Tyler has received here. It is light years ahead of what we had in UT. Plus, we would love to have you here. :)

My brother joined the Navy a little over a yr ago. He is currently based in Korea. He seems to like it okay, but he is single with no kids. He joined for money, insurance, tuition reimbursement, etc. I don't think he has seen much of anything yet. So... just some things to think over.

This is my first time on your blog. It was featured on Google Reader for me so I came on over.

I'm a Navy wife and we live in CA. I must say that everyone does not have the same experience. In the 3 years I've known my husband, he's most often home playing XBox in the afternoons. The deployment will come, I'm sure, but that's just an example that shows that it doesn't have to be that bad, y'know.

Anyway, feel free to email me if this is still something you'd like help with.

I'll continue reading now...
